To måneders stipendopphold på Velferden

NORDIC OPEN CALL

Are you a visual artist, dancer, writer, musician or critical theorist living and working in the Nordic countries?

Do you need a place to focus and develop your work this upcoming autumn?

We offer two professional artists or artist duos of any discipline a working stay at Velferden Centre for Contemporary Art. This residency is open for all types of practices and will offer a special focus on the coastline and the sea, through the collaboration with the art programme “The Tide is Changing”.

The dates are August 1st – September 30th 2022.

The residency offers two places, that each gets paid an artist grant of NOK 32.000 plus accommodation and travel.

ABOUT VELFERDEN:

Velferden Centre for Contemporary Art is an artist-run space that through various artistic programmes and theoretic fora addresses our relationship to nature. We produce and curate exhibitions, residencies, concerts and seminars throughout the year.

Velferden Centre for Contemporary Art is located in the old facilities and post industrial landscape of the mining company Titania, in the small town of Sokndal in southwestern Norway. The area is part of the Magma Unesco Global Geopark, and is characterised by a moon-like landscape of the rock Anorthosite and the constant transforming effect of several ongoing heavy industries excavating natural resources.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Velferden offers artists a unique setting to concentrate and develop existing or new work. The artists are not expected to present finished work at the end of the period, but will be asked to share their processes with us in a public presentation during the residency.

We look for self reliant professionals who can benefit from a working stay in the unique setting that we have to offer at Velferden. The residency will be especially relevant for artists with an interest in life and culture where the landscape meets the sea.

During the two months, we will provide a good introduction to the area, including a closer look at the culture, industry and natural life that exists along the historical shoreline. The artists will get the chance to meet with 3 external curators. One of the curators, Ida Højgaard will give an introduction to The tide is changing, a 3 year art programme that through a series of projects focuses on the connection between the sea, industry and people. FASCILITIES:

Velferden is located in an old mining town, a short drive or a picturesque walk away from the town centre of Sokndal.

The residents will live in our artist house, the historical “Direktørboligen” located in the centre of town. There is a relative distance between accomodation and work place, but we have an eletric bike and a car available for the artists to move between the fasilities.

Each artist will get a private bedroom and will share a bathroom, kitchen and living room with the other resident(s). The artists will be allocated a private studio space with 24 hr access in the old Administration building in the mining town next to Velferden. We also have a large project space available, in addition to vast outdoor areas for work and play.

Sokndal is located around 1,5 hr by car from Stavanger. The town centre has two grocery stores, two garages, a few shops and a post office i.e. The town and the general area has easy access to a varied landscape of both mountains, rivers, lakes, woodland and the shoreline.
